The Orsumella Estate is located in Montefiridolfi, at 350 m a.s.l, within the Chianti Classico denomination. Nearby is the village of San Casciano Val di Pesa, a few kilometers from Florence. Orsumella develops on the top of the hill on 78 hectares of which 40 dedicated to vineyards and 11 to olive groves. At the center of the Estate, along the ridge road that leads to the built up area is Corte Rinieri, an ancient residence that since the 1200's acted as a "court" for the business and administrative activities and country manor for the Buondelmonti, a noble florentine family. An old town story says that during summer nights youngsters loved to observe the reflection of the stars on the water of a stream that flowed at the bottom of a gorge. They were seven, called Ursa Minor and the brightest star was the Polar Star. Since then the stream bears the name Orsumella and still flows today through the vineyards on our Land. Our logo also encloses this story, with a seven point star and six smaller red ones around, red as wine. The company has been owned by the Menichetti family for 4 generations. In Orsumella the temperatures are the classic ones of a continental climate, with very warm summers and, often, rather cold winters, and with significant daily temperature swings from daytime heat to nighttime coolness. As far as the geological composition of the soils is concerned, these vary from area to area: it is, nonetheless, possible to identify a common element in the soils of all of the different sub-zones, and that is the rocks, the mixture of stones and pebbles of calcareous clays, of limestone and schist. The solar exposure south south-west of the land above sea level up to 350 meters that allows the grapes in the vineyards to reach optimum ripeness; microclimate which contributes to the maintenance of aromatic notes. The result is an elegant wine, with a strong personality, tannic with a scent that refers to a complex bouquet of wild berries and spices. The proximity to prestigious producers, and above all, the sharing of climate and land that have seen the birth of famous wines; defined by the international press as “among the most influential wines in the history of Italian viticulture”; it stimulates us to improve our quality. High-quality artisanal wine production is possible only after high-quality work in the vineyard and in crop selection, starting with grapes that are balanced, healthy, and optimally ripe. Only by starting with great grapes is it possible to create a wine that will eloquently express the characteristics of its terroir, avoiding any chemical-physical interventions that could alter its nature. Orsumella is an Organic winery. In our estate we apply an agricultural method that aims to produce food using natural substances and processes. This means that organic farming tends to have a limited environmental impact as it encourages : the responsible use of energy and natural resources, the maintenance of biodiversity, preservation of regional ecological balances, enhancement of soil fertility, maintenance of water quality. European Union (EU) regulations on organic farming are designed to provide a clear structure for the production of organic goods across the whole of the EU. Our mission is to seek quality, both in the vineyard and the cellar, with an unfailing respect for the character of the grapes. Manual collections, sulfites free vinifications, native yeasts. Large oak barrels are the tools used to get wines that we would like elegant and soft, with pronounced aromas and unique for each vintage released. The main grape of Orsumella wines is Sangiovese, which finds an authentic expression, elegant and refined by long but balanced refinements in wood. The presence of Cabernet Sauvignon in some wines stems from the desire to give the Sangiovese a different imprint, characterized by more spicy and intense notes. The territory of San Casciano is also ideal for the cultivation of olive trees. The heritage and experience arising from the agricultural world also characterize the production of olive oil of Orsumella estate. This beautiful plot of land within the estate gives birth to our precious extra-virgin oil. Features? Low acidity and distinctive sensory characteristics.
